A solitary figure kneels upon a stage. One hand forms a gesture of prayer while the other clutches a bouquet of withered flowers. Beside him, a cat directs its attention elsewhere while theatrical curtains frame an artificial sky. The scene presents devotion as something both sincere and performed, intimate and public at the same time.
The Costume of Devotion belongs to my ongoing series Echoes, which explores how sacred aspects of human experience can become obscured, distorted, or transformed into performance through distraction, expectation, inherited narratives, and the desire to be seen. Throughout the series, gestures that once carried genuine meaning are examined through the lens of spectacle, asking what remains when expression becomes separated from authentic experience.
In this painting, the act of devotion is presented as a theatrical event. The figure appears caught between genuine longing and ritualized performance. The wilted flowers suggest offerings that have outlived their purpose, while the stage itself raises questions about audience, intention, and sincerity. The cat, unconcerned with the drama unfolding around it, becomes a quiet counterpoint to the human need for recognition and validation.
