Few things are more deeply human than the desire to be understood. We all hope that someone else might see the world as we do, even if only for a moment. When that happens, the distance between two lives narrows in a way that's hard to put into words.

Understanding asks something difficult of us. It asks us to stay with another person's experience a little longer than feels comfortable, instead of rushing to interpret it through our own. That becomes increasingly difficult when so much of our attention is already spoken for. Listening gives way to waiting for our turn. Before long, we can spend an entire conversation speaking to a version of someone we've constructed in our own minds.

The work reflects a contemporary condition in which expression has become constant while reception has become increasingly rare. We live surrounded by declarations, performances, opinions, images, and demands for attention, yet genuine understanding often remains elusive. Something essential is being said repeatedly, but nobody seems able to hear it.
